Description

In 2001, conservators removed a linen backing that had been attached to the flag in 1914, revealing a side of the Star Spangled Banner not seen in over eighty years. Because the flag was in the conservation lab, it could not be photographed as a whole. Using computer technology, seventy-three individual shots of the flag were pieced together, like a puzzle, to create this composite image.
