Quick Start Guide for New Collectors: Build Your First Collection

You're In — Now Let's Build Something!

Congratulations on joining The Collecting Site! This guide will walk you through your first few steps so you can go from zero to a beautifully organized collection in minutes.

Step 1: Head to Your Dashboard

After logging in, click My Dashboard in the top navigation bar. Your Collector Dashboard is your command center — from here you can see all of your collections, recent activity, and quick-action buttons.

Step 2: Create Your First Collection

  1. On your Dashboard, click the "+ New Collection" button.
  2. Give your collection a name (e.g., "My Coin Collection" or "Vintage Baseball Cards").
  3. Add an optional description to help visitors understand what the collection is about.
  4. Choose a category — this helps other collectors find your collection when browsing.
  5. Set your privacy level:
    • Private — Only you can see it.
    • Public — Anyone visiting the site can browse it.
  6. Click Create Collection.

Step 3: Add Your First Item

  1. Open your new collection and click "+ Add Item".
  2. Enter the item's name and any details you want to track.
  3. Upload a photo — a good photo makes your collection come alive! You can drag and drop an image file or click to browse.
  4. Fill in any additional custom attributes — depending on your collection's template, you might see fields like Year, Condition, Grade, Serial Number, Publisher, or Material.
  5. Click Save Item.

Repeat this process to add as many items as you like. There's no limit on items in a collection.

Step 4: Use a Collection Template

Templates pre-load the right custom fields for your collecting category so you don't have to build them from scratch. When creating or editing a collection, look for the "Apply Template" option and pick one that matches your hobby:

  • Coins & Currency
  • Stamps
  • Sports Cards
  • Action Figures
  • Books
  • Movies
  • Diecast Vehicles
  • Toys & Many More…

Applying a template automatically adds the most commonly tracked attributes for that category, saving you significant setup time.

Step 5: Organize and Sort Your Items

Inside any collection you can:

  • Use the search bar to quickly find a specific item.
  • Sort by name, date added, or custom attributes.
  • Filter items by attribute values (e.g., show only items graded "Near Mint").

Step 6: Share Your Collection

If your collection is set to Public, it will appear in the site-wide Collections gallery. Share the direct link with friends, family, or on social media to show off your hobby.

You can update privacy settings at any time by editing the collection.

Tips for a Great Collection

  • Photos matter. Well-lit, high-resolution photos make your collection look professional and help you spot item details later.
  • Be consistent. Use the same format for names and attribute values (e.g., always "Near Mint" rather than "NM" or "near mint") so sorting and filtering work cleanly.
  • Start with what you have. Don't wait until your collection is complete — add items as you go. The site grows with you.
